Blog tour time again *twirls* and today it's Escape from Eden by Elisa Nader (: For the rest of the tour you can check out the tour schedule at YA Bound Book Tours

Firstly thanks to Elisa Nader and YA Bound Book Tours for providing a copy of the book for review as part of the tour <3

Synopsis:
"Since the age of ten, Mia has lived under the iron fist of the fundamentalist preacher who lured her mother away to join his fanatical family of followers. In Edenton, a supposed “Garden of Eden” deep in the South American jungle, everyone follows the Reverend’s strict but arbitrary rules—even the mandate of whom they can marry. Now sixteen, Mia dreams of slipping away from the armed guards who keep the faithful in, and the curious out. When the rebellious and sexy Gabriel, a new boy, arrives with his family, Mia sees a chance to escape.

But the scandalous secrets the two discover beyond the compound’s façade are more shocking than anything they ever imagined. While Gabriel has his own terrible secrets, he and Mia bond together, more than friends and freedom fighters. But is there time to think of each other as they race to stop the Reverend’s paranoid plan to free his flock from the corrupt world? Can two teenagers crush a criminal mastermind? And who will die in the fight to save the ones they love from a madman who’s only concerned about his own secrets?"

“Idioms are idioms for a reason”

In a year of post-apocalyptic Dystopians, science-fiction and new-adult debuts, Escape from Eden was a really refreshing and different read – it touched on a subject I don’t think I’ve ever read before and I really enjoyed it.

Set in the middle of the Amazon rainforest, the cult following of Eden is led to believe that their way of life is perfect and their town of Edenton is a utopia. Except for our protagonist Mia who dreams of life outside Edenton and remembers a different time of freedom back in the normal world.

“Edenton was created to shelter us from these temptations and keep our focus on the worship of our true God.”

I quite liked Mia’s character and voice for the most part. She definitely grew on me as the book went on; in the beginning I thought she was a bit dull and I was VERY worried about her reaction to new Edenton boy, Gabriel – it was scarily close to insta-love and Nader put the brakes on just in time. That aside, I saw her determination as the story progressed and her ever growing doubt of the Reverend’s claim that Edenton had a perfect way of living. While bold most of the time, her actions could also be justifiably called stupid. I thought she ran into situations too much without thinking things through properly but I guess those actions can be excused because of the brainwashing nature of the compound. What really annoyed me about Mia though was how she kept getting distracted by Gabriel. He’s a boy, get over it. There were so many times where his close proximity in dire situations nearly cost them their lives because being so close to sexy Gabriel made her freeze up. HELLO THERE ARE MORE IMPORTANT THINGS AT HAND *face palm* Otherwise I think I did like Mia. She was devoted to her mother and younger brother, she cared about her friends and had morals and strong values, but Nader didn’t make her out to be a saint/godly – and I loved that as Mia was quite relatable for that part.

“Weren’t things supposed to improve as you got older? You grow into yourself, understand who you are?”

Gabriel was the character I absolutely loved. He was switched on, quick to act and really efficient. I absolutely love characters like that. Whilst he still had that act-now-think-later attitude, his actions were justifiably smart. He didn’t dawdle, got to the point and I loved his snark. Ohmygoodness his snark was like the best part of the book. But Gabriel wasn’t without his faults. He’s haunted by a traumatic past and there’s no denying that for all his awesomeness, he’s also a player and a bit of a prick sometimes.

“Gabriel squinted, looked past Doc’s fingers, and said, ‘Hey Doc, did know your dreads are as thick as Snickers…’”

The secondary characters were an interesting mix. The Reverend himself was very rarely encountered first-hand by Mia – he was sort of in the distance but I think that highlighted his role in their compound and how close he really was to his people. I liked how many of the Edenton “family” annoyed me – they were all brainwashed and their actions and ways of thinking reflected this. More than once I got so pissed at Mia’s mum and her bunk mates I wanted to throw my Kindle but I think that shows Nader just did her job very well; she wrote characters that were such ardent followers of this cult it was highly believable!

Now the romance was quite interesting. Romance didn’t play a particularly large part in the book per se, but attraction and Mia’s reactions to Gabriel were very evident. I’m not sure how I feel about that as I mentioned before I got really annoyed with Mia’s priorities going all out of order as soon as Gabriel entered the scene. Nonetheless, Nader writes (first) attraction very well without the need to be graphic!

“My stomach fluttered. It was as if my body began to blossom, awaken, after seasons of cold.”

The plot played out as I expected it to – aka I predicted the main twist BUT I really liked how everything unfolded. It was enjoyable, action packed and you know what? For once, the protagonist doesn’t save the world on their own. And I loved that. Because it’s so unbelievable when a teenager just has the capacity to change a whole society and save everybody – Nader did the wonderful thing of using Mia as a catalyst that drove many events; I’m not saying Mia was passive-aggressive, she did a LOT but she didn’t do it all on her own and it made me relate to her all the more!

“All impulse and nerves, I spun and darted up the road, legs pushing and pushing, blindly leading me away…”

Overall, a very enjoyable YA that touches on a subject not dealt with often, written wonderfully in a manner that flowed and with characters that were fun and believable!

“Doubt everything, find your own light… Knowledge is freedom… Faith is not wanting to know what’s true.”

Indie-Credible Author: Rebecca Ethington

There are some great indie authors out there, but they don't gain the recognition they deserve. Laura and Shirley at Little Read Riding Hood and Creative Deed Reads had this great idea to promote these indie-credible authors and I jumped at the chance as I thought it was a fabulous idea.

Thus, it's my pleasure to introduce you to indie author Rebecca Ethington. In the short-time I've known her, I can say she's one of the nicest authors I've met. How I heard about Rebecca was actually through another indie author who was helping Rebecca promote her books. Rebecca did this amazing giveaway where she was giving away the ebook of Kiss of Fire - the first book in her Imdalind series. Giveaways are easy when you pick winners; Rebecca's giveaway was a little different - she was giving ANYBODY a copy of Kiss of Fire as long as we commented on her blog post. Here I was thinking "there are so many people commenting, she can't possibly read through all the comments and send everyone a copy". But I commented anyway as the book looked interesting. Two days later I got a copy of Kiss of Fire in my inbox! Not only that, Rebecca also said "While reviews are not required; good or bad, I would love to hear your thoughts." Instant respect because it's not easy putting your book out there for people, but even harder to say she appreciated people's thought, good OR bad. And it's the bad that's hard. Respect over 9000 when an author has the guts to say that.

Today I have Rebecca doing an interview, giving an excerpt into book 1, Through Glass, of her new Glass series, and providing random facts about her Imdalind series.

Through Glass was released just last week and is a new adult paranormal!

Through GlassSynopsis:
"Everyone remembered the day the sky went black. The day the sun was wiped from the sky. They remember the wind as it brought in the darkness; the way the earth shook and everything changed.

Everyone remembered the screams as the darkness ate those who were out in the open, those who had surrounded themselves by light, and those who made noise.

Everyone remembered the voice from the sky and the way food disappeared.

At least, that’s what I hoped. I hoped that there was an ‘everyone’ that would remember because I am not sure how many are left, how many survived. Or if anyone did.

I hoped that I wasn’t alone.

I remembered that day.

I remembered because it was the day I became alone.

It was the day that everything was perfect until the monsters took it away. Then the house went silent and the birds stopped singing. It was the day when everyone disappeared, everyone except the boy, the only person I have seen in two years.
The boy I talk to through the glass."

Excerpt

“Ah, I remember this.” I froze at his voice; I had somehow missed him coming right up behind me over the sounds of a land war occurring in my living room.
“Cohen!” I screeched in surprise, turning to face him. “You scared me.”
“Sorry.” He smiled and I became keenly aware that this was the closest I had been to him since he had gotten home. He looked so much older without the ten foot gap. “Your mom just kind of opened the door and went back to yelling.”
“Welcome back to the Lucha Libre,” I said, trying my best at a Hispanic accent and knowing I was failing.
It must have been really bad because Cohen didn’t even laugh; he only rolled his eyes at me.
“I guess I should have gotten them brightly colored masks for Christmas.”
“And mouth guards, definitely mouth guards.”
Cohen smoothly slid onto the bar stool next to mine and pulled one of the invitations toward him, his eyes scanning over the ridiculous, mostly illegible font my school had chosen. I watched his eyes move, waiting for my mind to click back into place and decide to actually say something that could pass as logical when his eyes stopped scanning, widening a bit, and the corner of his mouth pulled up.
Oh no.
I had read the invitations once, not really caring what they had said, and hadn’t thought anything of them since. Not until Cohen walked into my kitchen, picked one up and discovered what the next year had planned for me. I could tell by the way his eyes looked up at me from over the cardstock that he knew exactly what my intentions were, too.
“University of Cincinnati,” he said softly.
Everything inside of me shuddered.
So much for subtlety. I guess it’s good that I never got my they-have-a-good-economics-department speech figured out.
“Cohen, I…” I started, hoping to explain before the idea of my following him around firmly cemented in his mind, but it was too late. He had placed the invitation back on the counter and was looking at me a little more intently than I was comfortable with. My words were lost after only two had found their way out.
“I thought you didn’t know where you were going?”
“I lied.”
“I can see that.” He smiled and I felt the tense muscles in my neck relax. If that smile was any indication, he really didn’t care. In fact I would almost say he was happy about it. What happened to “not jeopardizing our friendship”?
I smiled in the most sheepish way I could muster, knowing I was failing at keeping the tomato red blush off my face. It wasn’t going to work, however, so I quickly chose to give up and look toward the stack of envelopes I had been working on only a moment before.
“Is that okay?” I mumbled, not even sure if my words were audible through the embarrassment that had somehow affected my speech patterns.
“Of course it’s okay.” His voice was soft in my ear and I fought a shiver that wanted to snake down my spine.
“I mean, it’s not like I didn’t want to stay close to home… I mean, I’m not following you to school or anything…” I spouted the first thing that came to mind haphazardly and regretted it instantly. Did I really just say that? Lame. Lame. Lame. I tried not to cringe as the words left my mouth, but I am not sure it worked.
Cohen chuckled beside me and I turned my eyes stoically away from him, fully aware I had hit tomato status in record time. I wish I could give him some snarky quip to replace the train wreck that had just occurred, but nothing was coming. Any other girl would have run away in stress and confusion, but I just sat there, looking like a sunburned strawberry.

An Interview with Rebecca

Q1. As someone who is an actress and born into a family of performers, was there anything you DIDN'T like about theatre?

The Drama – and yes, I know how cliché that sounds, but it’s like with any ‘job’ that has a basis in competition – things can get heated.

Q2. Shakespeare. Yay or nay?

Total Yay, there is a reason so many Shakespearean references are made in the Imdalind Series, all the shows and characters that are mentioned are characters I’ve portrayed.

Q3. Favourite fairy tale? And why?

Snow White and Rose Red. Look it up. I love it. I had never heard about it until I was cast as Rose Red, the story and the premise are amazing, and the show wasn’t too bad either.

Q4. What would your Patronus be? (Crossing my fingers you like HP since you mentioned your grandma and HP)

A St. Bernard. AKA A huge huggable Teddy Bear – at least that’s how I view my St. Bernard. Because she definitely likes to cuddle and telling a 120 lb ST. Bernard to get off your lap doesn’t really work too well.

Q5. Greatest perk of being an Indie author?

The people. I am a talker. So I love to talk and I have made so many great friends on this journey. It’s been such an amazing ride so far, I can’t wait to see where it takes me.

This or that?

1. Tea or coffee?
Neither. I do green juice.

2. Writing in total silence or with music?
Music – all day every day.

3. Dresses or pants (trousers? Not sure what they're called in America :P)
They are called pants mostly, but for me – I’m a jeans and a weird t-shirt kinda girl.

4. Night or day?
Day

5. Ebooks or print copies?
I was all print copies until I actually held a kindle in my hands, now I am e-books all the way

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly blog occurrence hosted by Breaking the Spine and showcases anticipated releases.

It's quite rare that I would eagerly wait a self-published book, but this week's WoW is for a book by a fellow book blogger. She's an absolutely lovely person and ever since she announced she was going to write a book and get it out there I've been eagerly awaiting it. It has a cover now and the release is only a month away. A month's wait until...

Release Date: October 29th 2013
Publisher: Self-published

Synopsis: "One hundred and fifty years ago, Earth was destroyed, and the remaining humans fled to the dusty red planet of Jutaire, where the only oxygen is manufactured, food is scarce, and death strikes often.
When Lissa's father discovers Earth still exists, she accidentally inhales the toxic air of Jutaire, and in one breath, discovers she isn't quite human.

Her father hangs for his discovery, and Lissa knows the Chancellors will come for her, for she saw the Earth that night too. With nothing to lose, she sets out to expose the truth. It isn't long before she meets Julian, a beautiful boy who can breathe the toxic air like she can - and shows her that the Jute, the original inhabitants of the planet, are more tangled in their lives than she knows.

But the Chancellors are only pawns in a greater game - one where the Jute control everything. Worse, the Jute plan to leave Jutaire for Earth, but to get there, they need her. And they'll stop at nothing until Lissa is in their clutches, even if they kill every human in the process.

My rating:

“If it was meant to be, it shouldn’t feel like a constant battle.”

There comes those rare moments in a reader’s reviewing life where one has to give a book 4+ stars even though the book actually wasn’t that great when it’s dissected and the parts analysed. It’s the whole idea of What Endures that made me really enjoy it and give it such a high rating. Usually, I take the different parts of what I think makes a good book and then take the aggregate to determine my rating, but in this case I had to ignore that precedent and take a holistic approach.

“The best advice I can give you is to look at this as a new start. A new beginning and go from there.”

What Endures begins with All-Star baseball player Jason Kincaid waking up from a coma after a car accident and his fiancé finding out that he’s forgotten the last 15 years of his life. Our female protagonist Megan Williams struggles from the very beginning with being near Jason – the doctor has explicitly told her not to tell Jason about his life/their life together as it won’t help him get his memories back, rather, it would confuse him. I could understand Megan’s battle with herself over this as she really wanted Jason to know what they are but on the other hand, she didn’t want to force his feelings or make him feel obligated to love her. She’s in love with him but she couldn’t act on any of those feelings and I felt her pain too at constantly needing to not only hide the feelings, but put distance between herself and Jason so that she wouldn’t accidentally let something slip. Frankly, it was exhausting. At others time I got completely frustrated with Megan and didn’t understand why she was withholding so much. Character-wise, I really admired Megan’s devotion to Jason and she genuinely cared about helping him recover, not making him fall in love with her again. She isn’t completely selfless though and that’s what made her real, a major part of her hiding her feelings is so she doesn’t get hurt – she’s protecting herself too. But sometimes I thought other than that, there wasn’t much else to her character.

“And yet while the eyes may have been familiar, the look and emotion in them weren’t, and that jarred her back to the harsh reality.”

I was really surprised by Jason’s character and quite pleased – but at times a little sceptical. There were moments when I thought “this guy is too good to be true”. He was really sweet, slightly cheeky and overall a really nice guy O_O to the media he’s aloof and confident but in the presence of Megan he was totally… Normal. And that was where his character confused me. Jason’s lost 15 years of his memories so he has a mind-set of a 12/13-year-old kid but he can still act like a 27-year-old and has the body of one. Obviously there are gaps. I don’t know how someone with long-term memory loss acts so I couldn’t tell if it was normal that the mind of a young teen was attracted to a 26-year-old woman… that sounds so wrong I know but it was just this nagging thought in my mind. I brushed it aside and accepted that it was normal so yeah I really liked Jason. I also liked the way Lee showed his conflicting emotions about his messed up family. At those times, the confused little boy came out and I think that really highlighted his memory loss and attempts to fill in the gaps.

“I’m so sick of everyone acting like I’m some sort of idiot who can’t handle things! I’m fucking sick of having people give me half-truths or tell me I’m not ready to hear something.”

THANK YOU KATIE LEE FOR NO LOVE TRIANGLE. Seriously thank you *bows down*. I am so sick of nearly every book I’ve read having a love triangle of sorts. Some are believable and I do like them, but others are just pointless and included for the sake of having something to write about. The romance in What Endures is straight-forward and to the blurb (another tick for me) – I got what I expected, in a good way! There is attraction but no insta-love which I thought was an amazing feat on Lee’s part. Now you might be thinking, “wait, it’s not that hard to not write insta-love” and yes this is true in most books. But What Endures was definitely a special case – two people who are lovers, one in an accident and forgets his memories and the other still in love with him… and Jason is definitely attracted to Megan. To not insta-love THAT I thought was commendable. Megan manages to hide her feelings from Jason so well, creating this chemistry between the two; in a way it was like starting a love story from scratch.

“It was one of those deliciously slow and languid kisses. The kind to revel in. The kind to savour each touch. To taste each kiss. And to get lost in the feeling.”

There were no surprises in the plot, which can be seen as a good and bad thing – for me this was definitely a good thing. If you want those angsty, depressing NA novels, this isn’t for you. If you want a book that delivers what the blurb describes, and you like said blurb, then you should definitely get this. For the most part, the plot IS the romance between Megan and Jason with Jason trying to get his memories back while Megan tries to keep her feelings at bay. But there are complications, and the relationship issues these two face can be heartbreaking – they’re essentially two people living in two different timelines. I thought the pace was perfect and I was speeding through this so quickly!

“...Haven’t you ever thought that the best things are hard because they make you value them more?”

The writing style I wasn’t very sure of; at times I felt like I was being told a lot of things but I couldn’t really tell because at other times I really enjoyed the style. It had this dream-like quality that was accentuated by the beach setting and was really lovely. However, I thought that was sort of ruined by the time jumps. It would be a chapter, then the next chapter would jump a few months or a few weeks and I thought it was unnecessary to state this in the chapter headings. Time should flow smoothly, not be staccato and stop and start at whatever intervals the author thinks just needs to be slotted in. Overall though, I thought Lee had a very quote-like style of writing which I absolutely love about books and this definitely amped it up for me – quote ALLLLLL the lines ;)

“The night air was cool and dry and carried the faintest scent of the Chesapeake Bay. He could hear the gentle lapping of the water against the shore, and there was a hypnotic musicality to it.”

Do you see what I mean when I say, if I took this apart the pieces don’t really line up to be a 4 star read? But… I DON’T CARE BECAUSE I LOVED THIS. This is the kind of book that puts a smile on my face (I also shed a few – no A LOT – of tears). The characters are sweet and thoughtful, no unnecessary angst, I get a love story in a gorgeous setting that is in the end relatable and I came out of this not only satisfied, but with heaps of lovely quotes. Lee is definitely an author to keep looking out for!

“Loving you was worth it. Worth everything.”

Feature & Follow Friday #3 (#166)

The Feature & Follow hop is a weekly meme hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read. The aim is for book bloggers to meet other book bloggers and garner followers :D

So I think it's the 166th actual Feature & Follow but it's only the 3rd one for me - I hope that explains the post title :D

And eeeep this week I'm the featured blogger yay :DDD

This week's question:

It is up to you to do a Kickstarter campaign for your favourite book!!! Who are you casting for the main characters?

Woahhhhh this is a really hard one. I have so many favourite books and taking a real person (even if they are a really good actor/actress) and making them fit into the mold of a much-loved character I've created in my mind is really hard to do - the film version isn't how they're always pictured and expectations not necessarily met. But here goes...

I'm going to choose Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas because Crown of Midnight (the sequel) is thus far my favourite book of 2013.

Main characters -

Celaena Sardothien

Celaena Sardothien: I would pick Jemima West as Celaena. After seeing her play Isabelle Lightwood in City of Bones I know she can be so badass and would pull off the assassin role nicely! She's also extremely pretty and her elvin features really make me think of Celaena.

Chaol Westfall

Chaol Westfall: even though he's not a actor, model Sean O'Pry is so smoking hot I envision him for quite a lot of male MCs. Chaol Westfall is definitely one of them. He's got the slightly rugged look that would fit Chaol's Captain of the Guard image, but also underneath, a refined edge that would be Chaol's aristocratic lineage.

Dorian Havilliard

Dorian Havilliard: I'm thinking Chase Crawford because he's got that playful nature that Dorian has - I always see the kiddish side of Dorian that hasn't quite grown up yet. But Chase can also pull off the princely/regal look *nods*

Ok yup I think that would be my dream cast for Throne of Glass :D

What would be your favourite book > movie dream cast?

If you want to follow me, I prefer Bloglovin (link on my sidebar) but email and GFC/Google+ is cool too - all links are on my sidebar (:
