Indie-Credible Author: Rebecca Ethington

There are some great indie authors out there, but they don't gain the recognition they deserve. Laura and Shirley at Little Read Riding Hood and Creative Deed Reads had this great idea to promote these indie-credible authors and I jumped at the chance as I thought it was a fabulous idea.

Thus, it's my pleasure to introduce you to indie author Rebecca Ethington. In the short-time I've known her, I can say she's one of the nicest authors I've met. How I heard about Rebecca was actually through another indie author who was helping Rebecca promote her books. Rebecca did this amazing giveaway where she was giving away the ebook of Kiss of Fire - the first book in her Imdalind series. Giveaways are easy when you pick winners; Rebecca's giveaway was a little different - she was giving ANYBODY a copy of Kiss of Fire as long as we commented on her blog post. Here I was thinking "there are so many people commenting, she can't possibly read through all the comments and send everyone a copy". But I commented anyway as the book looked interesting. Two days later I got a copy of Kiss of Fire in my inbox! Not only that, Rebecca also said "While reviews are not required; good or bad, I would love to hear your thoughts." Instant respect because it's not easy putting your book out there for people, but even harder to say she appreciated people's thought, good OR bad. And it's the bad that's hard. Respect over 9000 when an author has the guts to say that.

Today I have Rebecca doing an interview, giving an excerpt into book 1, Through Glass, of her new Glass series, and providing random facts about her Imdalind series.

Through Glass was released just last week and is a new adult paranormal!

Through GlassSynopsis:
"Everyone remembered the day the sky went black. The day the sun was wiped from the sky. They remember the wind as it brought in the darkness; the way the earth shook and everything changed.

Everyone remembered the screams as the darkness ate those who were out in the open, those who had surrounded themselves by light, and those who made noise.

Everyone remembered the voice from the sky and the way food disappeared.

At least, that’s what I hoped. I hoped that there was an ‘everyone’ that would remember because I am not sure how many are left, how many survived. Or if anyone did.

I hoped that I wasn’t alone.

I remembered that day.

I remembered because it was the day I became alone.

It was the day that everything was perfect until the monsters took it away. Then the house went silent and the birds stopped singing. It was the day when everyone disappeared, everyone except the boy, the only person I have seen in two years.
The boy I talk to through the glass."

Excerpt

“Ah, I remember this.” I froze at his voice; I had somehow missed him coming right up behind me over the sounds of a land war occurring in my living room.
“Cohen!” I screeched in surprise, turning to face him. “You scared me.”
“Sorry.” He smiled and I became keenly aware that this was the closest I had been to him since he had gotten home. He looked so much older without the ten foot gap. “Your mom just kind of opened the door and went back to yelling.”
“Welcome back to the Lucha Libre,” I said, trying my best at a Hispanic accent and knowing I was failing.
It must have been really bad because Cohen didn’t even laugh; he only rolled his eyes at me.
“I guess I should have gotten them brightly colored masks for Christmas.”
“And mouth guards, definitely mouth guards.”
Cohen smoothly slid onto the bar stool next to mine and pulled one of the invitations toward him, his eyes scanning over the ridiculous, mostly illegible font my school had chosen. I watched his eyes move, waiting for my mind to click back into place and decide to actually say something that could pass as logical when his eyes stopped scanning, widening a bit, and the corner of his mouth pulled up.
Oh no.
I had read the invitations once, not really caring what they had said, and hadn’t thought anything of them since. Not until Cohen walked into my kitchen, picked one up and discovered what the next year had planned for me. I could tell by the way his eyes looked up at me from over the cardstock that he knew exactly what my intentions were, too.
“University of Cincinnati,” he said softly.
Everything inside of me shuddered.
So much for subtlety. I guess it’s good that I never got my they-have-a-good-economics-department speech figured out.
“Cohen, I…” I started, hoping to explain before the idea of my following him around firmly cemented in his mind, but it was too late. He had placed the invitation back on the counter and was looking at me a little more intently than I was comfortable with. My words were lost after only two had found their way out.
“I thought you didn’t know where you were going?”
“I lied.”
“I can see that.” He smiled and I felt the tense muscles in my neck relax. If that smile was any indication, he really didn’t care. In fact I would almost say he was happy about it. What happened to “not jeopardizing our friendship”?
I smiled in the most sheepish way I could muster, knowing I was failing at keeping the tomato red blush off my face. It wasn’t going to work, however, so I quickly chose to give up and look toward the stack of envelopes I had been working on only a moment before.
“Is that okay?” I mumbled, not even sure if my words were audible through the embarrassment that had somehow affected my speech patterns.
“Of course it’s okay.” His voice was soft in my ear and I fought a shiver that wanted to snake down my spine.
“I mean, it’s not like I didn’t want to stay close to home… I mean, I’m not following you to school or anything…” I spouted the first thing that came to mind haphazardly and regretted it instantly. Did I really just say that? Lame. Lame. Lame. I tried not to cringe as the words left my mouth, but I am not sure it worked.
Cohen chuckled beside me and I turned my eyes stoically away from him, fully aware I had hit tomato status in record time. I wish I could give him some snarky quip to replace the train wreck that had just occurred, but nothing was coming. Any other girl would have run away in stress and confusion, but I just sat there, looking like a sunburned strawberry.

An Interview with Rebecca

Q1. As someone who is an actress and born into a family of performers, was there anything you DIDN'T like about theatre?

The Drama – and yes, I know how cliché that sounds, but it’s like with any ‘job’ that has a basis in competition – things can get heated.

Q2. Shakespeare. Yay or nay?

Total Yay, there is a reason so many Shakespearean references are made in the Imdalind Series, all the shows and characters that are mentioned are characters I’ve portrayed.

Q3. Favourite fairy tale? And why?

Snow White and Rose Red. Look it up. I love it. I had never heard about it until I was cast as Rose Red, the story and the premise are amazing, and the show wasn’t too bad either.

Q4. What would your Patronus be? (Crossing my fingers you like HP since you mentioned your grandma and HP)

A St. Bernard. AKA A huge huggable Teddy Bear – at least that’s how I view my St. Bernard. Because she definitely likes to cuddle and telling a 120 lb ST. Bernard to get off your lap doesn’t really work too well.

Q5. Greatest perk of being an Indie author?

The people. I am a talker. So I love to talk and I have made so many great friends on this journey. It’s been such an amazing ride so far, I can’t wait to see where it takes me.

This or that?

1. Tea or coffee?
Neither. I do green juice.

2. Writing in total silence or with music?
Music – all day every day.

3. Dresses or pants (trousers? Not sure what they're called in America :P)
They are called pants mostly, but for me – I’m a jeans and a weird t-shirt kinda girl.

4. Night or day?
Day

5. Ebooks or print copies?
I was all print copies until I actually held a kindle in my hands, now I am e-books all the way
